The Tellkamp family has established a grant to help first time Market Beet exhibitors to get started. The Dan and Jackie Tellkamp Grant was created to help youth to get started with their first year of a market steer project. Dan and Jackie loaned money for the purchase of their daughter, Julee’s first steer enabling her to start her Market Beef career. With this one year monetary advancement, Julee was able to grow a steer, show it at NCAFA and sell it during the Market livestock sale, and put the money toward her next year’s market steer project. With the opportunity this project presented, many relationships were formed that helped her later in life as well.
The goal of this Grant is to help a local youth to be able to purchase a steer to feed, train, show and sell at the Newaygo County Agricultural Fair. This project is a full years’ worth of responsibility, from buying it in early fall to selling it in August. During this time there are plenty of opportunities to learn responsibility, self-confidence, and commitment.
